Thrudheim Kindred Charming of the Plow Blót

February 13, 2000

The weather was gray and cold outside but the atmosphere was warm and bright inside as the kindred celebrated the Charming of the Plow at the home of Beth and John. The kids got right to work making masks for the Fasnacht activity later in the evening while the adults discussed several interesting topics. These included the self identification of Asatruar, labels in general, Bernhard's recent Norse sweat experience, and others.

As always the feast turned out to be a splendid affair. Beth made a wonderful dish called salmon pie. In addition there was crabmeat quiche, roast chicken, twice-baked potatoes, deviled eggs, homemade bread, and cheesecake.

After the feast the children were read the myth of Frey and Gerd. The kindred then gathered outdoors for the blót. Frey was asked for his gifts in bringing the cold Earth back to life. Tracy was welcomed as a full member into the kindred while Tara advanced to probationary member status. Jim officially declared his intention to study the Asatru path and was made an introductory member.

A rite was held to bring fruitfulness to the land. Beth had prepared a grain cake which was offered to the Earth. Several of her garden tools were also blessed.

Once darkness had fallen the children conducted their Fasnacht parade. The purpose was to chase the wights of cold and darkness away in the hopes of an early spring. They wore their masks and made quite a din with various noise makers. Soon afterwards the kindred departed for home.
