Thrudheim Kindred Winter Nights Blót

October 28-29, 2000

Fall was in the air as the kindred met to celebrate Winter Nights at Gee Creek. The days were warm and sunny while the nights were crisp and clear. Away from city lights, the night skies were filled with stars. It was an appropriate setting for seið on Saturday night.

Some of the kindred camped out Friday night and were met with a surprise. It seemed that all of Tennessee had decided this was the perfect weekend to camp out. After scouting a few sites, one was selected right on the bank of the Hiwassee River that afforded some privacy. Signs were made to direct the rest of the kindred who arrived on Saturday and Sunday. A guest of Steve's named Ed showed up for the weekend and was made welcome.

On Saturday at dusk a short blót was held to help set the stage for seið. The kindred gathered around the campfire and used the protocol developed by Diana Paxon. Beth took the high seat and acted as seeress for the group. Bernhard acted as guide while Steve and Cliff served as warders. Several questions were posed to and answered by the seeress. Afterwards the group talked around the campfire until the early hours of the morning.

Most of the group slept in the next morning and had a late breakfast. By noon most of the other kindred members who could only come on Sunday had arrived. Preparations for the feast commenced which included soup cooked over the campfire, roasted sweet potatoes, ham, chili, green beans, and several deserts. Plates were fixed for the landwights and ancestors and offered by the children. Afterwards the blót was held near the bank of the river and was dedicated to Holda, the Disir and Alfar.
