It was back to soggy weather as the kindred headed out to Cosby Campground in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park to celebrate Freyfaxi. In spite of the rain, we had one of our biggest turnouts ever for camping Saturday night and the blót on Sunday.
Nearly 25 people showed up to camp on Saturday afternoon. Fortunately, an area was found where most folks could camp close together. Guests came from as far away as Chattanooga and Asheville. The tents had hardly been set up when it started to pour. Under the rain tarps proved to be a popular spot!
The rain stopped later in the early evening in time for sumbel to start. It was really a large circle of people who were seated around the campfire. With the torches and campfire burning it made quite a site in the foggy forest. Two of the three rounds were completed before it started to rain again. The thunder and lightning in the mountains were awesome. The third round had to be completed under the rain tarp. Fortunately the rain stopped for good and the stars came out. People stayed up until the early hours of the morning to talk and share fellowship.
On Sunday, the skies were still gray as the group packed up and moved to the picnic shelter. There the blót was held under open skies - until it rained again. Fortunately it was easy to move things under the shelter. Laurel took her Companion Membership oath and was congratulated warmly by the kindred. Then it was time for the feast which featured harvest soup. Everyone brought some ingredient, some from their own gardens, for the pot. Beth did a great job with the spices and turned out quite a tasty dish. It was another great event.
