March 16-17, 2002
It was back to upper East Tennessee and the Owen homestead for Summer Finding this year. Things were pretty soggy but the rain did not dampen the spirits of the 12 kindred members and friends who showed up on Saturday afternoon.
Although it rained on the drive up from Knoxville, the skies cleared for a while on Saturday afternoon. Many of the members took the traditional hike up to the "Edge of the World" for a great view of Roan Mountain. Then it was back to the kitchen to finish up preparations for the evening meal. Laurel had a pot of lentil stew going as well as roast beef. There was also the infamous "broaster chicken" from the Citgo gas station, numerous side items, and desserts.
As dark approached, the group made its way to the cabin, which has become a favorite place for seið. Beth and Dea took turns in the high seat as they answered questions from the group and gave advice on weighty issues. Afterwards it was time for sumbel. The gods and ancestors were toasted followed by boasts and hopes for the future. Once sumbel was finished, it was time to have some fun. Laurel demonstrated more dances and even tried to teach a few simple steps to the coordination-impaired Bernhard to everyone's amusement.
The rains arrived early in the morning hours of Sunday, and rain it did, complete with thunder and lightning. The creeks and branches were soon running full. In the kitchen it was all business as the famous "morning after seið breakfast" got underway. There was bacon and Laurel's special scrambled eggs as well as Steve's made from scratch biscuits with milk gravy.
About 11:30 the rain stopped briefly, which was the cue to hold blót. The kindred gathered at the Thor Vé that Laurel had constructed last year. She led the group as gyðja for the first time and did a great job. Frey, Freyja, and Thor were invoked to help bring on spring. Items symbolizing new growth were collected from the kindred and blessed. Laurel recited a short poem about spring in Middle English.
Shortly after the blót, the kindred headed home.
