This year's Founding Day celebration was held at Big South Fork near Oneida, TN. As in years past, this was a members only blót. Most of the kindred were eventually able to make it.
Things did not bode well at the beginning as Steve, Tracy, Bernhard, and Laurel arrived at the camp grounds in a pouring rain. During a lull, the Viking Long Tarp (tm) was erected thanks to Steve who displayed some fine knotwork in the process. After some confusion about the registration process, other camp sites were obtained and set up. Eventually Joe, Dea, Ted, and Beth arrived to camp.
The weather cleared a bit as time wore on and the campers were treated to a near full moon shining through the mist. Sumbel was held around the campfire as usual followed by much merriment. So much so that the ranger had to pay a visit. He politely declined our offer of kippers as a gesture of hospitality.
Sunday dawned bright and sunny. Bernhard, Dea, and Laurel set out for a small waterfall along one of the trails. The forest was still damp from the rain the day before and the creek flowed full. They were able to walk behind the waterfall, a practice our ancestors said was useful for seeking the council of the gods. A small gift was left for the water nix (sprite).
By the time the hikers got back, John, Beth, Jack, and Malin had arrived. Everyone broke camp and headed to a covered picnic shelter to escape the blazing sun. As the tables were set, Cliff showed up. The blót was held and included a reaffirmation of the member oaths. Personal statements of frith were expressed by some. Most agreed it was a powerful experience. Immediately afterwards the feast was held.
