Thruðheim Kindred Charming of the Plow Blót

February 23, 2003

Laurel hosted this year's Charming of the Plow/Erda Blót at her homestead near Tri-Cities. The weather Saturday was pleasant and even a little sunny and warm as the kindred made the journey. It was nice to be able to sit outdoors after all the cold weather. Things changed as the weekend progressed however.

About 4:00 the feast got underway. As usual there were too many good things to eat to list them all. Lots of homemade items graced the table. Everyone dug in to have the energy required for seidh later.

Seidh got started around dusk in the cabin. By now the wind had picked up and rain was coming down hard. Thunder and lightning came too as Thor went to work. The group journeyed to the well with the seeresses. Questions were asked and answers given. Some of the gods and goddesses made their presence felt in a rather bold way.

After seidh, sumbel was held. Horns were raised to the gods and goddesses followed by the ancestors. Recently lost loved ones were remembered. Hopes and boasts were made until late into the night.

During the night the temperature kept dropping until snow started to fall. By morning there was an inch or two on the ground. Laurel led the blót in the cabin and Herbert took his first oath using the new oath ring that Steve had made. The kindred then walked out to the garden to make an offering in the hopes of coaxing the Earth awake from her long winter slumber. On the ride home, it again warmed up and Sunna showed her bright face.
