Thruðheim Kindred May Blót
May 17-18, 2003
Due to flooding caused by the recent heavy rains, the Gee Creek campground was closed. Fortunately, higher ground was available at the new campsite over at Beth and John's place, so camping went on as planned. Once again, a hearty, "Hail!" to the Osbornes for hosting a second event in a row!
Now, just because the ground was higher doesn't mean it was a dry affair. Shortly after the last campers arrived and set up their tents, the skies opened in the form of a torrential downpour. Lightning flashed and thunder rolled as the Thunderer drove his wagon across the sky smiting Jotuns and Etins.
It was a magnificent storm, and fortunately the campers were able to keep dry (mostly) thanks to the New and Improved Viking LongtarpR. Herb, Beth and Tracy played a little guitar to pass the time while Steve sang a verse or two. Beth also made some incredible pulled pork for everyone to snack on while the storm was overhead.
Eventually, the storm passed. After everyone made sure all their belongings in their tents stayed dry, a fire was started (um, fire paste anyone?) and the campers gathered around the campfire. Amazingly enough, the clouds parted and the stars shone through as sumbel was held. After sumbel, kippers were eaten and the usual visiting went on well past 2 a.m. until everyone retired for the night.
Sunday morning started off wet again with an early morning shower. Once the campers were up and around, camp was broken and all started 4-wheeling in the mud down to the Osborne homestead. This is where the impromptu Viking lumberjack games started. John, Herb and Steve had to clear several trees that had fallen into the trail so everyone could get their vehicles by.
About the time the campers arrived back down at the house, the other kindred members were arriving for the feast and blót. As always, the feast was amazing. Lamb, brisket, pulled pork, lasagna and salmon were just a few of the dishes offered in a quite meaty feast.
The sun was shining by the time blót started. Dea served as gyðja for the blót, which was once again held at the wooded vé. The goddess Walpurga was hailed, blessings of Walpurga were given, and old worries were released by being bathed in the smoke of a fire.
Once the blót was over, the kindred visited a while more, then headed home after an event-filled and satisfying weekend.
