Thruðheim Kindred Midsummer Blót

June 20-22, 2003

Clear skies, sunshine, a nice breeze - doesn't sound much like a recent Thruðheim camping event does it? Well, this time out the weather was beautiful and obviously set the tone for the annual gathering of Skaldheim and Thruðheim Kindreds, which was held at James H. "Sloppy" Floyd park in Georgia.

Friday and early Saturday were spent setting up camp and catching up with each other. Johnny and Jay of Skaldheim even rented a row boat and tried a little fishing, though in the end, no fresh fish were added to the feast.

The feast was held late Saturday afternoon, and as usual, was outstanding. Jay's legendary brisket was served, along with pork and beef barbeque, several varieties of beans, a corned beef stew, deviled eggs, potato salad and more.

As the sun was setting, Johnny, goði of Skaldheim, held a very energetic blót to Thor, Odin, and Frey. Later that night, sumbel was held around the campfire where many different gods and goddesses were toasted. The festivities lasted well into the early hours of Sunday morning with lots of spirited singing and celebration. The last of the merry-makers eventually found their way to their tents just an hour or two before sunrise.

After breakfast and a little cleaning up Sunday morning, Cliff, goði of Thruðheim, held a blót dedicated to Baldr. The blót discussed the significance of Baldr's death and how it relates to us, even now.

After blót, camp was broken, good-byes were said, and everyone began making their way home after a very fun and fulfilling weekend.
