Thruðheim Ullr / Skaði Blót and Honoring of the Einherjar
November 14, 2004

Ullr, the snow-shoe Ase |
Once more we were blessed with favorable weather as we gathered together Saturday evening at Steve and Tracy’s homestead to hold sumbel around the campfire. The skies were clear and, appropriately enough, there was just enough of a nip in the air to remind us that winter is right around the corner.
Those members present welcomed Chris, who was attending his first Ásatrú event. Everyone visited and, of course, ate way too many snacks (including a legendary batch of Steve’s bean-dip) before heading out around the campfire after sunset for a traditional three round sumbel.
Following sumbel, the visiting continued until the last guests made their way home early Sunday morning.
Sunday arrived clear and sunny as Thruðheim members gathered at Make and Jada’s place for the Ullr / Skaði Blót and Honoring of the Einherjar. The last of the guests arrived in the early afternoon, and the blót began shortly thereafter.
Steve, as in years past, served as goði for this blót. He and Tracy each spoke about the traits of both Ullr and Skaði and their importance in our faith. Both Great Archers were then hailed and honored by the kindred, and we recognized that it is now time for winter to take its necessary rule in the seasonal cycle.
Immediately following the conclusion of the Ullr and Skaði blót we held a sumbel-style Honoring of the Einherjar. A horn was passed around the circle, and each member spoke from the heart about what the Einherjar meant to them as they raised the horn. It was an intensely powerful ceremony with many fine and honorable words spoken.
During kindred rites, the kindred Oath ring was made ready as Jada took her Associate oath and Ed took his Member oath. All Hail the Oath Takers! Welcome home!
Feast was held afterward and there were many different wonderful dishes to sample. Jada whipped up a couple of tasty Finnish recipes for us to try. There was also BBQ pork, salmon, red beans and rice and various desserts.
Everyone visited until early evening before finally heading home after a very fulfilling day.
