Thruðheim Kindred Winter Nights Blót
October 16-17, 2004

Ted takes his Elder oath |
We gathered together at Ted and Beth’s to hold this year’s Winter Nights Blót. Cold evenings and warm days provided like the perfect backdrop as we said goodbye to fall and began preparations for winter. Those who camped Friday night weathered some Saturday morning rain showers, but by early afternoon the sun was shining and spirits were high as the Saturday campers arrived and set up their tents.
Later Saturday afternoon, kindred members and friends took turns firing Felecia’s longbow into a few now severely wounded hay bails. It was a great frith building activity, and allowed us all to feel closer to both Felecia and Talon who are currently overseas (We hope to see you two again soon – you are certainly missed).
About the same time the sun was setting, the group participated in a rousing game of bad-volly-mintonR. There were no real rules, no one kept score, and no one could see too well since the sun was very low in the western sky. The object seemed to be hitting the birdie up as high as possible so the opponents could swing a mighty swing and miss due to the poor dusk visibility. Perhaps next time we should try this when it’s daylight?
As night took hold and the temperature dropped, we gathered around the fire and held the traditional sumbel. Sumbel was followed by KipperTimeR (the kippers got off light this time) and much conversation.
Sunday morning was clear, mild and sunny as the remaining kindred members arrived for blót. Dea served as gyðja as we gathered together to hail Freyja and celebrate Winter Nights. A big thanks to Carl in California for supplying the mead. During the kindred rites portion of the blót , Ted took his Elder oath in a most moving and very powerful ceremony. Hail the Oath Taker!
Feast was held after the blót and, as always, included much tasty fare. This time there was buffalo chili, stew, Thai noodles, potato salad, cakes, pies and much more.
Campsites were broken down after the feast, but many members, not wanting to leave the company of their kin, remained until late afternoon before heading home after another great weekend together.
