Thruðheim Kindred Yule Blót

December 18-19, 2004

Yule 2004

This year's Yule celebration was kicked off Saturday evening at Steve and Tracy's homestead, where many members gathered for a fireside sumbel. The weather was cold and clear, but the fire and frith kept everyone warm and remarkably comfortable.

It was a traditional Thruðheim three round sumbel, where we toast the Gods and Goddesses, our ancestors, and voice our hopes for the future or brag/make a boast. The sumbel went on well past the first three rounds and continued on into open sumbel. By the time we finally wrapped up, the stars were hidden by the approaching winter storm clouds and the temperature had dropped significantly.

We ventured indoors and continued to visit and snack until members headed home to slumber and get ready for Sunday's Yule festivities.

The kindred and friends gathered again early the following afternoon at Steve and Tracy's. The weather was cold and cloudy and by mid-afternoon the dark snow clouds let loose with a nice dusting. We visited until late afternoon and then held feast, which as always, was not lacking in quality or quantity. Some of the fare included a chicken casserole, spinach dip and bread, pork loin, potato salad and many different desserts, highlighted by the Yule log cake.

After feast, we held blót. The space was hallowed, the mighty Aesir and wise Vanir were hailed and the horn was passed around the circle. This was followed by the traditional sacrifice of the bread boar. Next, we gathered outside around the fire to burn the Yule wreath and send our wishes for the new year up to Asgard.

After blót, we went back indoors and warmed up, visited, and enjoyed each other's company until late into the evening.

Good Yule, everyone!
