Thruðheim Kindred Winter Finding Blót

Septerber 17-18, 2005
Rite of Naming
The Rite of Naming for Wulf

The weather was decidedly better this time around as the kindred gathered to celebrate Winter Finding. It is at the Fall Equinox that signs of the approaching winter are sought. Here in East Tennessee it was still a bit early to see any fall colors, but a nip in the air was felt. Frozen Head State Park was the venue this time as it has been in years past.

Many of the kindred had arrived by mid-afternoon on Saturday including newcomer Darrell so an impromptu hike was organized. A small waterfall and pool was a short distance away. Little Matthew accompanied the adults and practiced his rock throwing, without managing to hurt anyone fortunately. His distance is good if not his aim. As darkness fell on the secluded camp site, the sumbel fire was lit. The Nashville kindred had arrived in time to participate as well. Many eloquent toasts were heard as the horn was passed. After sumbel it was time for kippers, and for the first time in many outings, the group was not able to finish them all off. There will always be another time.

Sunday dawned bright and fog-free as more of the kindred showed up for the day's events. Those that missed the hike on Saturday went off for a look at the waterfall for themselves. In the meantime preparations for feast commenced. When it was ready there was grilled bratwurst, chicken fajitas, fried chicken, several side salads, deviled eggs, and tasty desserts.

As in times past, the Ve was situated near a large rock. Herbert presided over an Odhin blot. It is felt by this kindred that the Old Man has his hand in the coming of winter and the ensuing Wild Hunt. As this is a time of preparation, runes were drawn by the group for guidance. Many in the group felt the presence of the Gray Wanderer - the air felt charged with electricity.

After the blot proper, it was time for kindred rites. Cliff and Elise brought their new son Wulf for his naming ceremony. As the proud parents and watchful siblings stood by, the kindred was asked for their help in raising the child in the ways of his people. It was a joyous occasion for all.
