Beth raises a horn to Frigga |
May Blot marked the first camping event of the year, and the weather could not have been better. Daytime temperatures were in the mid to upper 70s with low humidity. Nighttime temperatures were in the 40s which was a little nippy but tolerable. A steady breeze made it seem a little colder at night but was welcome during the day. The site this year was again Gee Creek, and we nearly had the place to ourselves despite dire predictions of being overrun by the dreaded Boy Scouts. Most of the kindred was able to attend along with Johnny and Jule from Nashville, Spence, and Brandon who joined us after a long absence.
At dusk, the kindred started the sumbel fire and gathered round to honor the gods and ancestors. There were several poignant toasts reflecting recent happenings. Mothers and family were on people's minds, especially for Ted having lost his mother recently. Looking ahead to Memorial Day, a number of family veterans were also remembered. Some of the lighter moments came after sumbel during a visit by the local park ranger who chatted with the group for quite a while. He shared stories about encounters with other groups in the past that were quite humorous. Since Ed did most of the talking, I'm sure we'll be added to the list. Ed's almond-flavored bug repellent also was a big hit when Kyli, Ted and Beth's dog, decided to help herself to Beth's legs which she had just treated. Last but least was the kipper fest before retiring for the evening.
Sunday saw a late start for most of the campers who, having stayed up until about 2:00 AM, were in no hurry to rise. The sky was clear and bright blue as Sunna lit up Midgard. It felt good to soak up the warm rays. Herb and Suzanne arrived about mid morning and the blot started around 1:00. Beth served as gydhja and dedicated the blot to Frigga. It was unscripted and heartfelt which connected with everyone quite well.
Afterwards the serious business of feasting was taken up with many tasty dishes including beef Stroganoff cooked on-site, chicken, tamales, a number of great salads, and pecan pie for dessert. People lingered for a few hours afterwards just to enjoy the beautiful weather and great companionship.
