Thruðheim Kindred Charming of the Plow Blót 2009
February 21-22, 2009

Bernhard officiated the blót |
Old Man Winter wasn't quite done as the kindred gathered to celebrate Charming of the Plow. After relatively mild temperatures and sunshine early in the day, a cold front moved in Saturday night in time for sumbel. The cold wind was no match however, for the warmth of fellowship as the folk toasted their elder kin and ancestors and made brags, boasts, or expressed hopes for the future.
The house wights at Bernhard and Shari's homestead were clearly in attendance and did their best at stealing a bit of ale for themselves judging from the rash of mysterious foaming beers.
After the traditional three rounds, Elise expressed her desire to become a kindred member in some detail. It was a special moment for her and husband Cliff who bestowed on her a magnificent Thor's hammer made of Baltic amber and silver. Elise plans to take her formal oath at Summer Finding. Welcome home after such a long journey!
Sunday morning brought a surprise in the form of snow. Although it was mostly just a dusting, it formed the perfect backdrop for the blot. Bernhard led the blot this time and talked about the wooing of Gerd by Frey. He reminded everyone that a great prize often requires a great sacrifice just as Frey gave his sword in exchange for Skirnir's help with Gerd.
The folk asked Sunna to warm the earth and Frey for a bountiful harvest this coming year. A loaf of bread was passed around for the group to infuse with their hopes. Later they would take a piece home to offer back to the earth.
The feast was sumptuous as always with pit BBQ, chicken, and casseroles. Several desserts finished things off along with hot cider. Good conversation followed for several hours until it was time to head home.
