The campers |
May is traditionally the beginning of camping season for the kindred, a joyous time as we huddle under tarps to watch the rain, and we were not disappointed. Actually, Saturday was dry in spite of several threatening rumbles of thunder reminding us that the Hammer Wielder was busy nearby. Only a few members showed up as there were several special circumstances that kept most folks at home. What the group lacked in numbers however, they made up for it in spirit. When darkness fell and with the campfire burning bright the sumbel horns were raised in praise of the Elder Kin. Healing thoughts also went out to Glenda as we honored her recently departed brother David. After sumbel, conversation lasted well after midnight.
Sunday dawned overcast but mild. As the morning progressed, the sun even made a brief appearance. The sleepy campers were joined by more members who came out to Frozen Head just for the day. A fire was rekindled and people gathered around it to catch up on events. About noon, it was time for blot. The group made their way a short distance to a spot ringed by boulders. Bernhard led a blot to Idhunn, keeper of the golden apples needed by the gods to stay young. After toasts to her, bits of apple were eaten as a way to focus thoughts of rejuvenation in our own lives. Remainders were offered to the land wights for their hospitality.
Then it was time for the feast. There was tasty picnic fare including chicken, various salads, and fruit pies. About half-way through, thunder rumbled, the skies opened up, and everyone ran for the tarp. The kindred took it in stride and even Kylie the Wonder Dog kept her cool. Eventually the rain tapered off enough to finish packing for the journey home.
